The complete absence of gospel music filled Tommy’s head, like a ballroom missing a chandelier. Aware now of the space between his own thoughts, the absence of things was everywhere plain as day. Staring hard at the parking meter in front of him, he felt faceless, bodiless, mindless. Fishing for quarters, he started thinking about women: the land of women, the terrain of women, the mystery of woman.
